A simple URL shortener
In the spirit of trying things just to try them, I've taken a note from one of my internet nerd heroes - Shaun Inman - and built my own url shortener. The idea came when Inman recently released an update to his hand rolled Lessn url shortener.
So. I grabbed a beer, bought the domain "johnni.es", and gave myself two hours (or the length of The Godfather - whichever came first) to build myself my very own url shortener.
As I see it, the true value of a url shortener is rooted in its ability to perform years down the line. It should be able to support hundreds of thousands of links without risking duplication issues or requiring url's with path's over 4-5 characters. So the first step was to decide on a format for my shortened url.

Here's how it works
My shortener takes a set of unique, url-friendly characters:
...and shortens the first patch from the beginning with http://johnni.es/a. When the system shortens the next link, it searches the database for the previous patch, which was "a", and increments it to the next character in the $chars array. In this case, the next character would be "b", and the new patch would be http://johnni.es/b.
The process continues until the system runs out of characters in the $char array. When this happens, the current character in the patch starts over at the beginning of the array at "a", and a second character is added to the left of the patch starting at the beginning of the array as well (http://johnni.es/aa). This new character will only increment once for every time the character to its right makes it through the entire $chars array. Therefore, the very next url will look like http://johnni.es/ab and once the rightmost character completes it's loop through the array, the url will be http://johnni.es/ba, and so on.
What I like most about this system is it's got a super high patches-to-characters-in-url ratio. By the time I would ever get to http://johnni.es/aaa, I would have had to shorten 238,328 urls. By http://johnni.es/aaaa I would have shortened 14,776,336 urls.
Clearly, that will never happen.

- Incrementing ids.The simplest method would be to simply assign an auto-incrementing id number to each link. The resulting url's would look like http://johnni.es/1, http://johnni.es/2, etc. However, this method doesn't expand well. By the time I've shortened 10,000 links, url's patch will be 5 characters long. Too long.
- Hashing ids. Another way to go would be to take the auto incrementing id and run it through some sort of hash - which would probably look something like http://johnni.es/eA8gP. The bummer is that I don't know any hashes that can generate a string this short without collisions. There's gotta be one (or many), because bit.ly seems to be using this method...or something similar. But, dude, I only had two hours.
- Smarter incrementing ids. After turning down those two ideas, and taking a look at the format Inman went with I had an epiphany: instead of using incrementing numbers, I could use my own longer set of characters to increment and dramatically increase the longevity of my shortener.
